History is not just looking at the past and recapping what people have already done. History allows us to learn about the many paths that have been taken that led up to our current point in time. Many times history is seen as a big picture where only a few people are represented and only one side of the story is told. But history can be much more than a retold story, history can teach us about ourselves and where we each come from, what our families have overcome, changes in our communities, progress we have all made, and even the setbacks we have endured. To know our history and the history of those around us allows us to be inclusive citizens and appreciate different backgrounds, cultures, and opinions.
Cultural awareness seems to be more important than ever considering recent events around the world. Learning about history can help students understand why some events happen and the consequences they may have caused. I think it is crucial that we learn from our past actions to try and prevent them from happening again. Young students are going to enter an extremely divisive society and it is important that they all know our history and how it affected people all over the world. We all share a common history and should use it to try and come together.
Studying history will also provide students with necessary life skills, such as analysis, critical thinking, empathy, and many others. In the near future, students will be able to use the skills they have acquired in any job or career that they obtain. History extends much further than a classroom, history can be applied to real life situations.
I hope that my classroom will be an open space where all students are able to learn about World History and critically question it. I know that World History may not seem like the most interesting or most relevant to students today, but it can be. Learning about events such as the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, or the World Wars can teach them how their lives have been shaped by events that occurred decades and even centuries ago. Our World History classroom will teach students much more than names, dates, and facts; we will learn how to approach historical events through different lens and learn the untold stories we do not read about in our textbooks. My main goal is to make history relevant for every student so they can see their place in it.
